How to Add a New WordPress User to a Mailchimp Audience
Want every new WordPress account to land in your Mailchimp audience without exporting a CSV every month? Zapify does this with the free A user registers trigger and the Add or update a subscriber action. Mailchimp is a Zapify PRO integration.
What this automation does
The automation is one trigger plus one action:
- Trigger: A user registers (
WP_USER_REGISTERED, WordPress) - Action: Add or update a subscriber (
MAILCHIMP_ADD_SUBSCRIBER, Mailchimp)
Whenever a new account is created, Zapify adds that person's email to the Mailchimp audience you choose — or updates their existing subscriber record if they're already in it.
PRO feature
Mailchimp is a Zapify PRO integration and needs a Connection under Settings → Connections. The A user registers trigger itself is free.
Before you start
- A Mailchimp account with at least one audience.
- Your Mailchimp API key, from Mailchimp's account settings. Keys end in a server prefix such as
-us21— Mailchimp's own guide shows exactly where to find one. - The Audience ID (Mailchimp calls it the List ID) for the audience you want to add people to — find it under Audience → Settings → Audience name and defaults.
How to build the automation
Step 1: Connect Mailchimp
- Go to Settings → Connections and click Add New.

- Choose Mailchimp, paste in your API key, and give the connection a name such as Newsletter Mailchimp.

-
Leave Server prefix empty unless your key doesn't carry one — Zapify reads it from the key automatically.
-
Save.
See Connections for how this screen works generally.
Step 2: Create a new automation
- In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
- Click Add New to open the builder.
- Name it clearly, such as Add new users to Mailchimp.

Step 3: Add the "A user registers" trigger
- Click Add Trigger.

- Choose WordPress as the app.

- Select A user registers.

Step 4: Add the "Add or update a subscriber" action
- Click Add Action.

- Choose Mailchimp as the app.

- Select Add or update a subscriber.

Step 5: Configure the action
| Field | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Yes | The Mailchimp connection you set up in Step 1. |
| Audience ID | Yes | The List ID of the audience to add the subscriber to. |
| Email address | Yes | Insert the trigger's User email token. |
| First name / Last name | No | Insert the trigger's name tokens if you have them. |
| Tags | No | Comma-separated tags to apply, such as new-user. |
| Status | No | Subscribed (default) adds them directly. Pending sends Mailchimp's own double opt-in confirmation email instead. |
Check your list's consent requirements
Setting Status to Subscribed adds someone without a confirmation step. If your audience's settings or your local email regulations require opt-in confirmation, use Pending instead.
Step 6: Set the steps Live and save
- Set both the trigger and the action to Live.
- Click Save.

Step 7: Test it
Register a test account with an email address you control. Check that address in your Mailchimp audience within a minute or two, or open Zapify → Logs to confirm the run and see the HTTP status Mailchimp returned.
Tokens you can use
The A user registers trigger exposes these tokens for the action's fields:
| Token | Value |
|---|---|
| User email | The new account's email address. |
| Display name / First name / Last name | Name parts, if set. |
| Username | The login name. |
| Registration date | When they registered. |
Conclusion
With the free A user registers trigger and the Add or update a subscriber action, Zapify keeps your Mailchimp audience current without a manual export. Combine it with a welcome email in the same automation, or notify your team in Slack when a product is purchased.
FAQs
Is this free in Zapify?
The trigger is free. Add or update a subscriber is part of the Mailchimp PRO integration and needs an active Zapify PRO licence and a Connection.
What happens if the person is already subscribed?
Mailchimp updates their existing record instead of failing — the action addresses subscribers by their email, so running it again for the same person is safe.
Where do I find my Audience ID?
In Mailchimp, go to the audience, then Settings → Audience name and defaults. Mailchimp calls it the List ID there.
My connection fails with a server-prefix error. What does that mean?
Every normal Mailchimp key ends in a datacentre suffix, like -us21, and Zapify reads it from the key automatically. If your key doesn't carry one, add it explicitly in the Server prefix field on the connection.
Can I add tags automatically, like "new-user"?
Yes, using the action's Tags field — comma-separate several if you need more than one.
Do I need to write any code?
No. The connection and every field are configured visually — the API key is the only thing you copy from outside Zapify.
