BuddyPress Automations
Add a User Role When Someone Joins a BuddyPress Group
Groups are how a BuddyPress community organises itself. If other parts of your site — a members-only page, a course, a shop discount — are gated by WordPress role, joining a group should hand out that role automatically. Zapify does this with the A user joins a group trigger and the Add a role to a user action.
What this automation does
The automation is one trigger plus one action:
- Trigger: A user joins a group (
BP_GROUP_JOINED, BuddyPress) - Action: Add a role to a user (
WP_ADD_USER_ROLE, WordPress)
When a member joins the group you choose, Zapify grants them the role you specify.
Before you start
- BuddyPress must be installed and active, with the User Groups component switched on. Zapify's BuddyPress integration is not available on sites running BuddyBoss Platform.
- The group and the role must already exist.
How to build the automation
Step 1: Create a new automation
- In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
- Click Add New to open the builder.
- Name it clearly, such as Grant Insider role on group join.

Step 2: Add the "A user joins a group" trigger
- Click Add Trigger.
- Choose BuddyPress as the app.
- Select the trigger A user joins a group.
- In the trigger's Group field, pick the specific group, or leave it on Any group.

Step 3: Add the "Add a role to a user" action
- Click Add Action.
- Choose WordPress as the app.
- Select Add a role to a user.

Step 4: Configure the action
| Field | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Yes | The role to grant — pick from your site's registered roles. |
| Replace existing roles | No | Off (default) keeps the roles the member already has. On replaces them with just this one. |
| User | No | Leave empty to use the person the automation is running for — the member who joined. |

Be careful with Replace existing roles
Leave Replace existing roles switched off unless you are sure. When it is on, the member keeps only the new role, so an administrator or editor who joins the group could lose their existing access.
Step 5: Set the steps Live and save
- Set both the trigger and the action to Live.
- Click Save.

Tokens you can use
| Token | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Group ID | The numeric ID of the group the member joined. |
| Group name | The name of the group. |
| Group URL | The link to the group's page. |
How to test it
- Join the chosen group with a test member, or add them from the group's admin screen.
- Open Users in the WordPress admin and confirm the test member now has the role.
- If the role was not added, open Zapify → Logs to see whether the run fired.
Conclusion
With the A user joins a group trigger and the Add a role to a user action, Zapify keeps WordPress roles in step with BuddyPress group membership without manual admin work. Next, welcome the member at the same time with send an email when a user joins a BuddyPress group.
FAQs
Does this also work when an admin adds the member to the group?
Yes. The automation runs for the member who joined, not for the admin who added them, so the role goes to the right person.
Does the role get removed if the member leaves the group?
No. This automation only adds a role. It does not watch for people leaving a group.
Can one group grant more than one role?
Yes. Add a second Add a role to a user action with a different role.
Is this feature free?
Yes. BuddyPress is a free Zapify integration, and both the A user joins a group trigger and the Add a role to a user action are included in the free plan.
Do I need to write any code?
No. Everything is configured in the Zapify visual builder.
