Groundhogg Automations
How to Add a Groundhogg Tag When a Student Completes a LifterLMS Course
A finished course is the best moment to sell the next one, ask for a review, or invite someone into an alumni list. Zapify can tag the student in Groundhogg as soon as LifterLMS marks the course complete, using the A user completes a course trigger and the Add tags to a contact action. LifterLMS and Groundhogg are both Zapify PRO integrations.
What this automation does
The automation is one trigger plus one action:
- Trigger: A user completes a course (
LIFTERLMS_COURSE_COMPLETED, LifterLMS) - Action: Add tags to a contact (
GROUNDHOGG_ADD_TAG, Groundhogg)
When the student completes the course you choose, Zapify applies your tag to their Groundhogg contact. If they are not in Groundhogg yet, Zapify creates the contact from their WordPress account first.
PRO feature
LifterLMS and Groundhogg are Zapify PRO integrations. The Groundhogg trigger and action used in this automation needs an active Zapify PRO licence.
No Connection needed
Groundhogg runs on your own site rather than somebody else's server. There is no API key to paste and nothing to set up under Settings → Connections — the integration only needs Groundhogg installed and active.
Before you start
- LifterLMS and Groundhogg installed and active.
- At least one published LifterLMS course.
- A tag name in mind, such as
completed-web-design-101. You do not need to create it first.
How to build the automation
Step 1: Create a new automation
- In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
- Click Add New to open the builder.
- Name it clearly, such as Tag students who finish a course.

Step 2: Add the "A user completes a course" trigger
- Click Add Trigger.

- Choose LifterLMS as the app.

- Select A user completes a course, then pick the Course to watch.
Step 3: Add the "Add tags to a contact" action
- Click Add Action.

- Choose Groundhogg as the app.

- Select Add tags to a contact.

Step 4: Configure the action
| Field | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Tags | One of the two | Pick one or more tags that already exist in Groundhogg. |
| Tag names | One of the two | Type tag names separated by commas. A name that does not exist yet is created, so the automation works the first time you run it. Matching ignores upper and lower case. |
| Contact email | No | Leave empty. Zapify then uses the student who completed the course, and creates their Groundhogg contact from their WordPress account if needed. |
Step 5: Set the steps Live and save
Each trigger and action has its own Live / Off / Draft switch. A new automation starts as a Draft and does nothing until its steps are Live.
- Set the trigger and every action to Live.
- Click Save.

Step 6: Test it
Complete the course as a test student, or mark it complete. Open the student's contact in Groundhogg → Contacts and check the tag, or open Zapify → Logs to confirm the run.
Tokens you can use
The A user completes a course trigger exposes Course ID, Course title and Course URL. Use Course title to build the tag name: type completed- and insert the token into Tag names if you want one automation for any course.
After the action runs, it exposes:
| Token | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Contact ID | The contact that was tagged. |
| Tag IDs | The IDs of the tags applied, comma separated. |
Conclusion
With the A user completes a course trigger and the Add tags to a contact action, course completions become tags your Groundhogg funnels can react to. For the email side, see sending an email when a LifterLMS course is completed.
FAQs
Is this free in Zapify?
No. LifterLMS and Groundhogg are both Zapify PRO integrations, so both the trigger and the action need an active PRO licence.
What does Contact email do when it is empty?
Zapify uses the student the automation is running for. It finds their Groundhogg contact, or creates one from their WordPress email and name.
Can I tag someone else instead?
Yes. Type an address or insert a token into Contact email to tag a different contact, such as a manager.
Can I use different tags per course?
Yes. Build one automation per course, or insert the Course title token into Tag names to use one automation for all.
Do I need to write any code?
No. Everything is configured visually.
