How to Add a Contact Form 7 Signup to a Mailchimp Audience
A signup form should not need somebody to copy addresses into Mailchimp by hand. Zapify sends each Contact Form 7 submission across with the free A form is submitted trigger and the Add or update a subscriber action. Mailchimp is a Zapify PRO integration.
What this automation does
The automation is one trigger plus one action:
- Trigger: A form is submitted (
CF7_FORM_SUBMITTED, Contact Form 7) - Action: Add or update a subscriber (
MAILCHIMP_ADD_SUBSCRIBER, Mailchimp)
Each time the form is submitted, Zapify adds the visitor's email to the Mailchimp audience you choose, or updates their record if they are already in it.
Before you start
- Contact Form 7 installed and active, with a published form that has an email field.
- A Mailchimp account with at least one audience.
- Your Mailchimp API key, from Mailchimp's account settings. Keys end in a server prefix such as
-us21— Mailchimp's own guide shows exactly where to find one. - The Audience ID (Mailchimp calls it the List ID) — find it under Audience → Settings → Audience name and defaults.
PRO feature
Mailchimp is a Zapify PRO integration and needs a Connection under Settings → Connections. The A form is submitted trigger itself is free.
How to build the automation
Step 1: Connect Mailchimp
- Go to Settings → Connections and click Add New.

- Choose Mailchimp, paste in your API key, and give the connection a name such as Newsletter Mailchimp.

-
Leave Server prefix empty unless your key doesn't carry one — Zapify reads it from the key automatically.
-
Save.
See Connections for how this screen works generally.
Step 2: Create a new automation
- In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
- Click Add New to open the builder.
- Name it clearly, such as Add form signups to Mailchimp.

Step 3: Add the "A form is submitted" trigger
- Click Add Trigger.

- Choose Contact Form 7 as the app.

- Select A form is submitted.

- In the Form field, pick the specific form. Choosing a form gives you one token per field on it.
Step 4: Add the "Add or update a subscriber" action
- Click Add Action.

- Choose Mailchimp as the app.

- Select Add or update a subscriber.

Step 5: Configure the action
| Field | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Yes | The Mailchimp connection you set up in Step 1. |
| Audience ID | Yes | The List ID of the audience to add the subscriber to. |
| Email address | Yes | Insert the token for the form's email field. |
| First name / Last name | No | Insert the matching form-field tokens, if your form collects them. |
| Tags | No | Comma-separated tags to apply, such as website-signup. |
| Status | No | Subscribed (default) adds them directly. Pending sends Mailchimp's own double opt-in confirmation email instead. |
Check your list's consent requirements
Setting Status to Subscribed adds someone without a confirmation step. If your audience's settings or your local email regulations require opt-in confirmation, use Pending instead.
Step 6: Set the steps Live and save
Each trigger and action has its own Live / Off / Draft switch. A new automation starts as a Draft and does nothing until its steps are Live.
- Set the trigger and every action to Live.
- Click Save.

Step 7: Test it
Submit the form yourself with an address you control. Check that address in your Mailchimp audience within a minute or two, or open Zapify → Logs to see the HTTP status Mailchimp returned.
Tokens you can use
Once you select a specific Contact Form 7 form, the trigger exposes these tokens. Insert them anywhere in the email with the {} button.
| Token | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Form ID | The numeric ID of the submitted form. |
| Form title | The form's name. |
| Submitted at | The date and time of the submission. |
| All fields | Every submitted field rendered as one labelled block — handy when you just want the whole submission in the email. |
| One token per field | The value the visitor entered in that field, named after the field's tag (for example a your-email tag becomes a your-email token). |
Multi-value fields such as checkbox groups are joined into a readable, comma-separated list.
Conclusion
With the free A form is submitted trigger and the Add or update a subscriber action, every signup reaches your Mailchimp audience without a manual export. To do the same for new accounts, see adding a new WordPress user to a Mailchimp audience.
FAQs
Is this free in Zapify?
The trigger is free. Add or update a subscriber is part of the Mailchimp PRO integration and needs an active Zapify PRO licence and a Connection.
What happens if the person is already subscribed?
Mailchimp updates their existing record instead of failing — the action addresses subscribers by their email, so running it again for the same person is safe.
Where do I find my Audience ID?
In Mailchimp, go to the audience, then Settings → Audience name and defaults. Mailchimp calls it the List ID there.
My connection fails with a server-prefix error. What does that mean?
Every normal Mailchimp key ends in a datacentre suffix, like -us21, and Zapify reads it from the key automatically. If your key doesn't carry one, add it explicitly in the Server prefix field on the connection.
Do I need to write any code?
No. Everything is set up visually.
