How to Write a Debug Note to the Run Log When a WooCommerce Order Changes Status

When an automation does not behave, the quickest answer is to see what its tokens actually contained. Zapify can write them into the run log with the Write a note to the log action. This guide uses an order status change as the trigger, but the same approach works with any trigger. Both parts are free.

What this automation does

The automation is one trigger plus one action:

  • Trigger: An order changes status (WC_ORDER_STATUS_CHANGED, WooCommerce)
  • Action: Write a note to the log (UTIL_LOG_NOTE, Utilities)

When an order changes to the status you choose, Zapify writes a line to the run log with the tokens already filled in. Nothing else happens.

Before you start

  • WooCommerce installed and active.
  • Both the trigger and the action are free.

How to build the automation

Step 1: Create a new automation

  1. In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
  2. Click Add New to open the builder.
  3. Name it clearly, such as Debug: order status changes.

Step 2: Add the "An order changes status" trigger

  1. Click Add Trigger.

Add a trigger

  1. Choose WooCommerce as the app.

Select WooCommerce as the trigger

  1. Select An order changes status.

Select An order changes status

  1. Set New status to the status you want to watch, for example Completed.

Step 3: Add the "Write a note to the log" action

  1. Click Add Action.

Add an action

  1. Choose Utilities as the app.

Select Utilities as the action

  1. Select Write a note to the log.

Step 4: Write the note

In the Note field, mix text with the tokens you want to check. For example:

Order {{trigger:ORDER_NUMBER}} went from {{trigger:FROM_STATUS}} to {{trigger:TO_STATUS}}.
Customer: {{trigger:BILLING_EMAIL}}. Total: {{trigger:ORDER_TOTAL}} {{trigger:ORDER_CURRENCY}}.
Items: {{trigger:ORDER_ITEMS}}

Tokens are resolved before the note is written, so the log shows the real values.

Step 5: Set the steps Live and save

Each trigger and action has its own Live / Off / Draft switch. A new automation starts as a Draft and does nothing until its steps are Live.

  1. Set the trigger and every action to Live.
  2. Click Save.

Set the automation live

Step 6: Read the result

Change a test order to the chosen status. Open Zapify → Logs, open the latest run and read the note. If a value is empty or wrong, you have found the token to fix in the real automation.

Conclusion

With the Write a note to the log action you can see what an automation is working with instead of guessing. Once you are happy, copy the tokens into a real action such as adding an order note. See Utilities for the other utility actions.

FAQs

Is this free in Zapify?

Yes. The trigger and the action are both free.

Does the note slow the automation down?

No. It runs in order and writes one short line to the log. Notes longer than 2,000 characters are cut.

Can I put the note between two actions?

Yes. It shows the state at exactly that point in the run, which is handy for checking what an earlier action produced.

Should I leave it in a live automation?

You can, but it is meant for building and debugging, so most people remove it once the automation works.

Do I need to write any code?

No. Everything is configured in the Zapify visual builder.
