Groundhogg Automations
How to Add a New WordPress User to Groundhogg as a Contact
Running Groundhogg on the same site and want every new WordPress account to land in your CRM without copying emails by hand? Zapify does this with the free A user registers trigger and the Create or update a contact action. Groundhogg is a Zapify PRO integration.
What this automation does
The automation is one trigger plus one action:
- Trigger: A user registers (
WP_USER_REGISTERED, WordPress) - Action: Create or update a contact (
GROUNDHOGG_UPSERT_CONTACT, Groundhogg)
Whenever a new account is created, Zapify creates a matching Groundhogg contact — or updates the existing one if that email is already in your CRM — and can tag it at the same time, so a Groundhogg funnel can pick it up.
PRO feature
Groundhogg is a Zapify PRO integration. The Groundhogg action used in this automation needs an active Zapify PRO licence.
No Connection needed
Groundhogg runs on your own site rather than somebody else's server. There is no API key to paste and nothing to set up under Settings → Connections — the integration only needs Groundhogg installed and active.
Before you start
- Groundhogg installed and active.
- Decide on a tag for new registrations, such as
new-user. You do not need to create it first.
How to build the automation
Step 1: Create a new automation
- In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
- Click Add New to open the builder.
- Name it clearly, such as Add new users to Groundhogg.

Step 2: Add the "A user registers" trigger
- Click Add Trigger.

- Choose WordPress as the app.

- Select A user registers.

Step 3: Add the "Create or update a contact" action
- Click Add Action.

- Choose Groundhogg as the app.

- Select Create or update a contact.

Step 4: Configure the action
| Field | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Insert the trigger's User email token. | |
| First name / Last name | No | Insert the trigger's name tokens if you have them. |
| Phone | No | Leave empty unless you collect a phone number at registration. |
| Marketing status | No | Leave on Leave unchanged unless you have consent to market to these users. See the note below. |
| Contact owner | No | Pick the WordPress user who should own the contact in Groundhogg, or leave unchanged. |
| Custom meta | No | Extra Groundhogg meta values — the meta key on the left, the value on the right. |
| Tags / Tag names | No | Tags to apply. Type new-user in Tag names; Zapify creates the tag if it does not exist. |
Fields you leave empty are not written, so running the automation again never blanks out details Groundhogg already holds.
Marketing status and consent
Only choose a confirmed or subscribed Marketing status where the person has actually agreed to hear from you — for example, an opt-in checkbox on your registration form. Otherwise leave it unchanged and let Groundhogg's own opt-in process handle it.
Step 5: Set the steps Live and save
Each trigger and action has its own Live / Off / Draft switch. A new automation starts as a Draft and does nothing until its steps are Live.
- Set the trigger and every action to Live.
- Click Save.

Step 6: Test it
Register a test account. Open Groundhogg → Contacts and look for the new contact and its tag, or open Zapify → Logs to confirm the run.
Tokens you can use
The A user registers trigger exposes these tokens for the action's fields:
| Token | Value |
|---|---|
| User email | The new account's email address. |
| Display name / First name / Last name | Name parts, if set. |
| Username | The login name. |
After the action runs, it exposes these tokens to any action placed after it:
| Token | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Contact ID | The Groundhogg contact's ID. |
| The contact's email address. | |
| Contact was created (1) or updated (0) | 1 when a new contact was made, 0 when an existing one was updated. |
Conclusion
With the free A user registers trigger and the Create or update a contact action, Zapify keeps Groundhogg current the moment somebody creates an account — with no external service or API key. Combine it with a welcome email in the same automation, or let a Groundhogg funnel take over from the tag you applied.
FAQs
Is this free in Zapify?
The A user registers trigger is free. Create or update a contact is part of the Groundhogg PRO integration and needs an active Zapify PRO licence.
Do I need to set up a Connection?
No. Groundhogg runs on the same site as Zapify, so the action talks to it directly — there is nothing to paste under Settings → Connections.
What if the person is already a Groundhogg contact?
The action updates the existing contact that has the same email instead of creating a duplicate. Only the fields you filled in are changed.
Do I need to create the tag first?
No. Names typed into Tag names are created in Groundhogg if they do not exist yet. Use the Tags dropdown only for tags that already exist.
Will the tag start my Groundhogg funnel?
It should. Zapify applies the tag using Groundhogg's own tagging, so a funnel set to start when that tag is applied can pick it up. Confirm this on your site with a test registration.
Do I need to write any code?
No. Every field is configured visually in the Zapify builder.
