BuddyPress Automations

Add a New Member to a BuddyPress Group When Their Account Is Activated

New members join a quiet community and often never find their way in. A "Welcome" or "Start here" group fixes that — but only if people actually end up in it. Zapify puts every new member there for you, using the A user account gets activated trigger and the Add a user to a group action.

What this automation does

The automation is one trigger plus one action:

  • Trigger: A user account gets activated (BP_ACCOUNT_ACTIVATED, BuddyPress)
  • Action: Add a user to a group (BP_ADD_USER_TO_GROUP, BuddyPress)

When a new member activates their account, Zapify makes them a full member of the group you choose. There is no invitation to accept and no request for an admin to approve.

Before you start

  • BuddyPress must be installed and active, with the User Groups component switched on in your BuddyPress settings. Zapify's BuddyPress integration is not available on sites running BuddyBoss Platform.
  • The group must already exist. Public, private and hidden groups can all be chosen.

BuddyPress is required

This automation needs BuddyPress installed and active. If it is missing, Zapify can offer to install it from the trigger picker. BuddyPress is a free Zapify integration.

  1. In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.

Tokens this action makes available

Later actions in the same automation can use these:

Token What it holds
User ID The ID of the member who was added.
Group ID The ID of the group.
Group name The name of the group.

How to test it

  1. Register a new test member and activate the account from the activation email.
  2. Open the group in BuddyPress and check its member list, or look at the test member's Groups tab.
  3. If they were not added, open Zapify → Logs. The log says why — for example that the group no longer exists, or that the member is banned from it.

Conclusion

With the A user account gets activated trigger and the Add a user to a group action, every new BuddyPress member lands in your starter group without any manual work. Next, greet them with a welcome email on activation, or email them whenever they join any group with send an email when a user joins a BuddyPress group.

FAQs

Does the member have to accept an invitation?

No. The action makes them a full member straight away. It skips invitations and approval, which is what you want for an automatic welcome group. If the member had a pending invitation or request for that group, it is cleared.

What happens if the member is already in the group?

Zapify treats it as a success and logs that the member is already in the group. Nothing breaks, so re-running the automation is safe.

What if the member is banned from the group?

They are not added, and the log tells you why. A ban set by a group admin is respected.

Will this also run my "A user joins a group" automations?

Yes. The action uses BuddyPress's own join function, so adding someone counts as that person joining the group. Any automation listening for A user joins a group runs as well. Avoid building one that adds people to the same group it is listening to.

Can I add new members to more than one group?

Yes. Add another Add a user to a group action and pick a different group.

Is this feature free?

Yes. BuddyPress is a free Zapify integration, and both the trigger and the action are included in the free plan.

Do I need to write any code?

No. Everything is configured in the Zapify visual builder.
