How to Add a WooCommerce Customer to Mailchimp When a Product Is Purchased

Buyers of a specific product are a ready-made audience — people to send care tips, upgrades or a review request. Zapify can add them to Mailchimp the moment they buy, using the A product is purchased trigger and the Add or update a subscriber action. The trigger is free; Mailchimp is Zapify PRO.

What this automation does

The automation is one trigger plus one action:

  • Trigger: A product is purchased (WC_PRODUCT_PURCHASED, WooCommerce)
  • Action: Add or update a subscriber (MAILCHIMP_ADD_SUBSCRIBER, Mailchimp)

When the chosen product is bought, Zapify adds the buyer's billing email to your Mailchimp audience, or updates their record if they are already in it.

Before you start

  • WooCommerce installed and active.
  • A Mailchimp account with an audience, and your Mailchimp API key (it ends in a server prefix such as -us21) — see Mailchimp's guide.
  • The Audience ID (Mailchimp calls it the List ID), under Audience → Settings → Audience name and defaults.

PRO feature

Mailchimp is a Zapify PRO integration and needs a Connection under Settings → Connections. The WooCommerce trigger is free.

How to build the automation

Step 1: Connect Mailchimp

  1. Go to Settings → Connections and click Add New.

Open the Connections tab

  1. Choose Mailchimp, paste in your API key, and name the connection something like Shop Mailchimp. Leave Server prefix empty unless your key does not carry one.

Add the Mailchimp connection

  1. Save.

See Connections for how this screen works generally.

Step 2: Create a new automation

  1. In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
  2. Click Add New to open the builder.
  3. Name it clearly, such as Add buyers to Mailchimp.

Step 5: Configure the action

Field Required What it does
Connection Yes The Mailchimp connection from Step 1.
Audience ID Yes The audience to add the buyer to.
Email address Yes Insert the trigger's Billing email token.
First name / Last name No Insert the Billing first name and Billing last name tokens.
Tags No Comma-separated tags to apply, such as bought-starter-kit.
Status No Subscribed adds them directly. Pending sends Mailchimp's own confirmation email first.

Check consent

A purchase is not always consent to marketing email. If your audience settings or local rules require opt-in, use Pending, or add a consent checkbox at checkout and only continue when it is ticked. See Filters and conditions.

Step 6: Set the steps Live and save

Each trigger and action has its own Live / Off / Draft switch. A new automation starts as a Draft and does nothing until its steps are Live.

  1. Set the trigger and every action to Live.
  2. Click Save.

Step 7: Test it

Place a test order for the product with an email address you control. Check the audience in Mailchimp, or Zapify → Logs for the HTTP status Mailchimp returned.

Tokens you can use

Token What it holds
Billing email / Billing first name / Billing last name / Billing phone The customer's details from the order.
Product names / Product IDs What was bought.
Order ID / Order number / Order total / Order currency / Order date The order itself.

Conclusion

With the A product is purchased trigger and the Add or update a subscriber action, buyers join the right Mailchimp audience on their own. For other premium integrations on the same purchase, see adding the customer to FluentCRM or logging the order to Google Sheets.

FAQs

Is this free in Zapify?

The WooCommerce trigger is free. Add or update a subscriber needs an active Zapify PRO licence and a Connection.

What if the customer is already subscribed?

Mailchimp updates their existing record, so running it again for the same person is safe.

Can I tag them with the product name?

Yes. Put the Product names token in the Tags field, or type a fixed tag per product by making one automation for each.

Does it run for guest checkouts?

Yes. The billing email is on the order, so an account is not needed.

Do I need to write any code?

No. The API key is the only thing you copy from outside Zapify.
