Groundhogg Automations
How to Add a WooCommerce Customer to Groundhogg When a Product Is Purchased
Every sale is a chance to follow up — a thank-you sequence, a review request, a cross-sell. Zapify can add each buyer to Groundhogg and tag them the moment they pay, using the free A product is purchased trigger and the Create or update a contact action. Groundhogg is a Zapify PRO integration.
What this automation does
The automation is one trigger plus one action:
- Trigger: A product is purchased (
WC_PRODUCT_PURCHASED, WooCommerce) - Action: Create or update a contact (
GROUNDHOGG_UPSERT_CONTACT, Groundhogg)
When an order containing the product you choose reaches a paid status, Zapify creates or updates a Groundhogg contact from the order's billing details and applies the tags you chose.
Guest checkouts work
The action uses the Billing email from the order, not a WordPress account, so customers who checked out as guests are added to Groundhogg too.
PRO feature
Groundhogg is a Zapify PRO integration. The Groundhogg action used in this automation needs an active Zapify PRO licence.
No Connection needed
Groundhogg runs on your own site rather than somebody else's server. There is no API key to paste and nothing to set up under Settings → Connections — the integration only needs Groundhogg installed and active.
Before you start
- WooCommerce and Groundhogg installed and active.
- A tag name in mind, such as
customer. You do not need to create it first.
How to build the automation
Step 1: Create a new automation
- In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
- Click Add New to open the builder.
- Name it clearly, such as Add WooCommerce buyers to Groundhogg.

Step 2: Add the "A product is purchased" trigger
- Click Add Trigger.

- Choose WooCommerce as the app.

- Select A product is purchased.

- Set the Product field to the product that should start the automation, or leave it on Any to add every buyer.
The trigger fires when the order reaches a paid status such as Processing or Completed, not while it is still Pending payment.
Step 3: Add the "Create or update a contact" action
- Click Add Action.

- Choose Groundhogg as the app.

- Select Create or update a contact.

Step 4: Configure the action
| Field | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Insert the Billing email token. | |
| First name | No | Insert the Billing first name token. |
| Last name | No | Insert the Billing last name token. |
| Phone | No | Insert the Billing phone token. |
| Marketing status | No | Leave on Leave unchanged. Buying something is not consent to marketing emails unless your checkout says it is. |
| Tag names | No | Type customer. Add a second tag such as bought-hoodie (comma separated) to tell products apart. |
Step 5: Set the steps Live and save
Each trigger and action has its own Live / Off / Draft switch. A new automation starts as a Draft and does nothing until its steps are Live.
- Set the trigger and every action to Live.
- Click Save.

Step 6: Test it
Place a test order for the product and mark it as paid. Open Groundhogg → Contacts and check for the contact and its tags, or open Zapify → Logs to confirm the run.
Tokens you can use
The A product is purchased trigger exposes these tokens for the action's fields:
| Token | Value |
|---|---|
| Billing email | The customer's billing email. |
| Billing first name / Billing last name / Billing phone | Customer details. |
| Product IDs / Product names | The purchased products. |
| Order ID / Order number | Order identifiers. |
| Order total / Currency | Order value and currency. |
Conclusion
With the free A product is purchased trigger and the Create or update a contact action, every buyer lands in Groundhogg with the right tag, ready for a post-purchase funnel. To record what they bought on the contact, continue with adding a Groundhogg note when a product is purchased.
FAQs
Is this free in Zapify?
The A product is purchased trigger is free. Create or update a contact is part of the Groundhogg PRO integration and needs an active Zapify PRO licence.
Does it work for guest customers?

What if the customer is already in Groundhogg?
The existing contact is updated and the tags are added to it. Fields left empty are not overwritten.
Can different products add different tags?
Yes. Build one automation per product, each with its own Product and Tag names.
