How to Add a WooCommerce Customer to ActiveCampaign When a Product Is Purchased

When a purchase should start an ActiveCampaign automation — onboarding, an upsell, a review request — the customer has to be a contact first. Zapify adds them with the A product is purchased trigger and the Add or update a contact action. The trigger is free; ActiveCampaign is Zapify PRO.

What this automation does

The automation is one trigger plus one action:

  • Trigger: A product is purchased (WC_PRODUCT_PURCHASED, WooCommerce)
  • Action: Add or update a contact (ACTIVECAMPAIGN_ADD_CONTACT, ActiveCampaign)

When the chosen product is bought, Zapify adds the buyer to ActiveCampaign, or updates their contact if they already exist.

Before you start

  • WooCommerce installed and active.
  • Your ActiveCampaign API URL and API key, from Settings → Developer — see ActiveCampaign's guide.

PRO feature

ActiveCampaign is a Zapify PRO integration and needs a Connection under Settings → Connections. The WooCommerce trigger is free.

How to build the automation

Step 1: Connect ActiveCampaign

  1. Go to Settings → Connections and click Add New.

Open the Connections tab

  1. Choose ActiveCampaign, paste in the API URL (no trailing slash) and the API key, and name the connection something like Shop ActiveCampaign.

Add the ActiveCampaign connection

  1. Save.

See Connections for how this screen works generally.

Step 2: Create a new automation

  1. In the WordPress admin, go to Zapify → Automations.
  2. Click Add New to open the builder.
  3. Name it clearly, such as Add buyers to ActiveCampaign.

Step 5: Configure the action

Field Required What it does
Connection Yes The ActiveCampaign connection from Step 1.
Email address Yes Insert the trigger's Billing email token.
First name / Last name No Insert the Billing first name and Billing last name tokens.
Phone No Insert the Billing phone token.

Step 6: Set the steps Live and save

Each trigger and action has its own Live / Off / Draft switch. A new automation starts as a Draft and does nothing until its steps are Live.

  1. Set the trigger and every action to Live.
  2. Click Save.

Step 7: Test it

Place a test order. Check ActiveCampaign's Contacts list, or Zapify → Logs for the HTTP status it returned.

Tokens you can use

Token What it holds
Billing email / Billing first name / Billing last name / Billing phone The customer's details from the order.
Product names / Product IDs What was bought.
Order ID / Order number / Order total / Order currency / Order date The order itself.

Conclusion

With the A product is purchased trigger and the Add or update a contact action, a sale starts your ActiveCampaign journey automatically. For a form lead instead of a sale, see adding a Contact Form 7 submission to ActiveCampaign.

FAQs

Is this free in Zapify?

The WooCommerce trigger is free. The ActiveCampaign action needs an active Zapify PRO licence and a Connection.

What if the contact already exists?

The action adds or updates, so running it again for the same email is safe.

Can I put the customer on a list or tag them?

This action adds the contact. List membership and tags are better handled by an ActiveCampaign automation that starts when a contact is added.

My connection fails. What should I check?

The API URL must be your account's own address with no trailing slash, and the key must be the one from Settings → Developer.

Do I need to write any code?

No. The URL and key are the only things you copy from outside Zapify.
