Benefits of URL Shortify
Third-party shorteners put someone else's brand on your links, keep your click data, and can rewrite or kill a link at any time. URL Shortify is a self-hosted WordPress link shortener, so every branded short link, every click statistic, and every redirect rule lives on your own domain and inside your own database. This page explains the concrete benefits of running your shortener yourself.
What is URL Shortify?
URL Shortify is a self-hosted WordPress plugin that creates, manages, tracks, and shares branded short links from your own domain. Because it runs on your site, you own the links and the analytics — there is no external service to depend on and no per-click fee.
Branding on every link
Short links use your own domain (yourdomain.com/go/sale) instead of a generic shortener. Branded links look trustworthy, reinforce your name every time they are shared, and tend to earn more clicks than anonymous ones. You can also set a link prefix such as /go/ to keep short links tidy — see Slug & Link Prefix Settings.
Click tracking you own
Every click is recorded in your WordPress database with referrer, device, browser, OS, and country. The free plugin shows the last 7 days of click history plus dashboard KPIs, a click chart, and an activity heatmap. Because the data never leaves your site, you are the only party with access to it. See Link Tracking.
PRO feature
Unlimited click history, all-time and custom date ranges, and the geo/device/browser/OS visual breakdowns are PRO. See the feature list for the full free-versus-PRO comparison.
Full control of your redirects
You choose how each link forwards visitors — 307 (temporary, the default), 302 (temporary), or 301 (permanent) — and you can edit a link's destination at any time without changing the short URL. You can also mark links Nofollow or Sponsored and enable Parameter Forwarding, all in the free version. See How to Create a Short Link.
No third-party dependency
There is no external account, API limit, or subscription between you and your links. If a hosted shortener shuts down or changes its terms, every link built on it breaks. Self-hosted links keep working as long as your site does, and you can migrate your existing links in with a free one-click importer — see One-Click Import from Other Plugins.
Organization that scales
Group related links together and roll up their analytics with Link Groups, auto-create short links for new posts and pages, and manage everything from one URL Shortify → Links screen. As your link library grows, the structure grows with it rather than becoming a flat, unsearchable list.
Privacy and compliance
URL Shortify acts as the data processor for your own click data, which keeps it GDPR-friendly. You can anonymise clicks data (mask the IP, or store no personal data at all) from the settings, so you collect only what you need.
Conclusion
Running your shortener yourself means branded links, click data you own, redirect control, and no reliance on an outside service — all in the free plugin. Next, see the full Features breakdown, or follow Getting Started with URL Shortify to create your first link.
FAQs
Why use a self-hosted URL shortener instead of Bitly or TinyURL?
A self-hosted shortener puts your own domain on every link, keeps all click data inside your WordPress database, and removes any per-click fee or API limit. Hosted services own your links and analytics and can change terms or shut down. With URL Shortify, your links keep working as long as your site does and no third party sees your traffic.
Does URL Shortify slow down my WordPress site?
No. URL Shortify handles redirects with a lightweight lookup and does not add front-end scripts to your pages. Because redirects run on your own server rather than an external service, they can be faster than routing clicks through a hosted shortener.
Is my click data private with URL Shortify?
Yes. All click data is stored in your own WordPress database and is never sent to a third party, which keeps URL Shortify GDPR-friendly with you as the data processor. You can also enable Anonymise Clicks Data in the settings to mask visitor IP addresses or store no personal data at all.
Do I need the PRO version to benefit from URL Shortify?
No. The free plugin already delivers the core benefits: branded short links on your domain, redirect control, link groups, 7-day click analytics, imports, and an email digest. PRO adds custom domains, dynamic redirects, QR codes, password protection, and full analytics for teams that need them. See the Features page.
