Auto-Create Short Links When You Publish Posts & Pages

If you want a short link for every post and page without adding one by hand, URL Shortify can create it for you automatically on publish. Turn it on under URL Shortify → Settings → Links → Auto Create Links For and pick the post types to include. Posts and pages are free; all other custom post types require URL Shortify PRO.

When auto-create is enabled for a post type, URL Shortify generates a short link the moment you publish a new item of that type — no extra step in your editor. The short link is attached to the post, so it appears alongside it and can be displayed automatically in your content. Existing content published before you turned the setting on is not affected; to add links to older posts in bulk, use bulk generate instead.

  1. Go to URL Shortify → Settings.
  2. Open the Links tab.
  3. Find the Auto Create Links For section.
  4. In Select Custom Post Type(s), tick the post types you want short links created for on publish. Untick a type to stop auto-creating links for it.
  5. Save your settings.

By default, Posts and Pages are selected.

Auto Create Links For

PRO feature

Posts and pages are free. Selecting other custom post types (products, portfolios, and so on) requires URL Shortify PRO. Once PRO is active, every registered custom post type appears in this list for selection.

Auto-create only generates the link. To also print the short URL near the post content on the front end, enable the display option:

  1. Go to URL Shortify → Settings → Display.
  2. In Display Options, tick Auto create short link?.
  3. Save.

This is separate from the Auto Create Links For setting: Auto Create Links For controls whether a link is generated on publish, while Auto create short link? and the surrounding display options control where and how the short URL is shown. See Display Short URL in Content for the full display configuration.

Conclusion

Auto-create takes the manual step out of link building — publish a post or page and its short link is ready. Choose your post types under Settings → Links → Auto Create Links For, add PRO to include custom post types, and pair it with the display option to surface each link automatically. To create links for content you published earlier, run a bulk generate.

FAQs

Go to URL Shortify → Settings → Links → Auto Create Links For and, under Select Custom Post Type(s), tick the post types you want. From then on, publishing an item of a selected type generates a short link automatically. Posts and pages are included by default.

Can I auto-create short links for custom post types like products?

Custom post types beyond posts and pages require URL Shortify PRO. With PRO active, every registered custom post type — WooCommerce products, portfolios, and others — appears in the Auto Create Links For list so you can select it. In the free version, only Post and Page are available.

No. Auto-create only fires when you publish new content of a selected type, so existing posts are left untouched. To generate short links for content published before you enabled the setting, use the PRO bulk generate action from the Posts, Pages or custom post type list.

How do I stop auto-creating links for a post type?

Go to URL Shortify → Settings → Links → Auto Create Links For, untick the post type in Select Custom Post Type(s), and save. New posts of that type will no longer get a short link on publish. Links already created stay in place until you delete them.

Auto Create Links For (Settings → Links) decides whether a short link is generated when you publish. Auto create short link? (Settings → Display) is a display option that governs whether the generated short URL is printed automatically alongside your content on the front end. You can enable one without the other.
