How to Send a Magic Link After a Form Submission

Want the confirmation email your form already sends to carry a one-click login link? With Magic Link PRO you put the {magic-link} tag in the notification, tick the form under Magic Link → Settings → Integrations, and the tag becomes a working passwordless login link for whoever receives that email. Works with WPForms, Gravity Forms, and Fluent Forms.

How it works

There are two switches, and both have to be on:

1. The integration switch for the builder — Enable Gravity Forms integration, Enable WPForms integration, and so on — under Magic Link → Settings → Integrations → Form Builders. This is on by default.
2. The form itself, ticked in the list beneath that switch, or via the toggle inside the form builder.

Enabling a form is a permission, not an action. It tells Magic Link that this form's notifications are allowed to use the {magic-link} tag. Magic Link never sends an email of its own on the form's behalf.

So a form you have not ticked keeps behaving exactly as it always did, even if someone types {magic-link} into one of its notifications — and switching the integration off stops every form for that builder in one go.

The integration switch keeps your form choices

Turning the integration off hides the form list and stops the tag working, but it does not forget which forms were ticked. Turn it back on and they are exactly as you left them. Use it as a pause button, not a reset.

Why this helps

A form is usually the moment someone tells you who they are, and the notification they get back is the natural place to hand them a way in.

• "Request access" without manual work. Someone fills in a form asking for access to a resource, a portal, or a members' area, and the reply already contains a link that signs them in.
• Event and webinar sign-ups. Attendees register, and the confirmation puts them straight into the content on the day.
• Return a customer to their account. A support or enquiry form can quietly hand someone a way back in, which is often the real reason they were writing.
• You keep your own wording. The link sits inside the email you already designed, in your voice, rather than in a second message from the plugin.

Important: the recipient needs an account

A magic link signs somebody in to an existing account. The tag is resolved for the recipient of the notification, so if that email address does not belong to a user on your site, the tag is removed and no link is sent.

This is deliberate — a form that created accounts for any address typed into it would be an open door. If you want people to get accounts automatically, look at Trusted domains, which does that for addresses on domains you approve.

How to set it up

1. Enable the form

Go to Magic Link → Settings → Integrations, find the Form Builders section, make sure the builder's integration switch is on (it is by default), and tick the form in the list beneath it. Only the builders you actually have installed appear here.

If the integration switch is off, the form list is hidden, and the toggle inside WPForms is disabled. In Gravity Forms the toggle is replaced by a note saying the integration is off and whether the form is currently ticked — Gravity Forms does not let other plugins disable a toggle, so a note is the honest alternative to a switch that would flip and do nothing.

Or, for WPForms and Gravity Forms, do it where you build the form:

• WPForms — open the form, go to Settings → General, expand Advanced at the bottom, and switch on Allow {magic-link} in notifications. WPForms puts settings added by other plugins inside Advanced, so it is collapsed by default.
• Gravity Forms — open the form, go to Settings, find the Magic Link section, and switch on Allow {magic-link} in notifications.
• Fluent Forms — use the central list under Magic Link → Settings → Integrations. Fluent Forms builds its settings screens in a way that does not allow other plugins to add a toggle.

2. Put the tag in the notification

Edit the notification that goes to the person submitting the form — usually the one addressed to the form's email field — and add {magic-link} wherever the link should appear. For example:

Use the hyphen, {magic-link}. The underscore form, {magic_link}, is a different tag used by the LMS and store integrations and is not replaced in form notifications.

Which notification should carry the tag

The link is made for whoever receives the email. Put the tag in the notification addressed to the person who submitted the form. If you put it in the copy that goes to you, the admin, the link will sign in your account, not theirs.

How to test it

1. Make sure the email address you are testing with belongs to a real user on your site.
2. Tick the form under Magic Link → Settings → Integrations, or in the builder.
3. Add {magic-link} to the notification that goes to the submitter.
4. Submit the form from the front end.
5. Open the notification email. The tag should have become a link.
6. Click it in a private or incognito window — in your normal browser you are already logged in, so any link looks like it works.

You should receive one email, your notification, containing one link. Magic Link does not send a separate message.

If the tag is not replaced

• Check the integration switch is on. It sits at the top of the builder's block under Settings → Integrations → Form Builders. When it is off the form list is hidden, which is the usual sign.
• Check the form is ticked. A form that is not enabled has the tag removed, by design.
• Check the address has an account. No account means the tag is removed and no link is made.
• Check the spelling. It is {magic-link} with a hyphen.
• Check which notification you edited. The link is for the recipient of that specific email.
• Check your site sends email at all. Magic Link → Health verifies this.

Conclusion

FAQs

What does the integration switch do?

It is a master switch for one form builder. Off means no form for that builder can use the tag, no matter what is ticked; on means the ticked forms decide. It is on by default, and switching it off does not forget which forms you ticked — turn it back on and they return.

Does enabling a form send a magic link email automatically?

No. Enabling a form only allows the {magic-link} tag in that form's notifications. If none of the notifications contain the tag, nothing changes. Magic Link never sends a separate email on a form's behalf.

Why did the tag disappear from my notification?

Either the form is not ticked under Magic Link → Settings → Integrations, or the recipient's email address does not belong to a user on your site. In both cases the tag is removed rather than left as literal text, so the email still reads cleanly.

Can I use {magic-link} in the admin copy of the notification?
