Duplicate Short Links in WordPress: Stop Rebuilding the Same Link

By KaizenCoders

Here is a small task that eats more time than it should.

You are launching a campaign across five channels — newsletter, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and a partner site. Each one needs its own short link, so you can tell afterwards which channel actually delivered.

The links are nearly identical. Same destination. Same 301 redirect. Same custom domain. Same tracking pixel. Same group, so the reporting stays tidy. Same UTM medium and campaign. The only thing that differs is utm_source.

So you build the first link carefully, and then you build the next four by hand, one field at a time, hoping you set the pixel on all of them and did not fat-finger the campaign name on the third.

You did not. Nobody does. Two weeks later the report has a mystery bucket in it, and tracing it back takes longer than building the links did.

The fix is unglamorous and effective

URL Shortify PRO can now duplicate a link. Hover any link in URL Shortify → Links and click Duplicate, next to Edit.

The copy appears immediately, named after the original with (Copy) appended, and carrying everything the original had:

  • target URL and description
  • redirect type — 301, 302 or 307
  • nofollow, sponsored, tracking and parameter forwarding flags
  • expiry date and password
  • custom domain
  • UTM parameters and preset values
  • dynamic redirection and link rotation rules
  • tracking pixels
  • groups and tags

What it does not carry is the slug or the click history. The duplicate gets a freshly generated slug — respecting your configured link prefix — and starts its click count at zero. Two independent links, tracked separately.

Which means the five-channel campaign above becomes: build one link properly, duplicate it four times, and edit one field on each copy.

Duplicating in bulk

If you need several copies at once, tick the links you want, choose Duplicate from the Bulk actions dropdown under Other Actions, and hit Apply. Every selected link is copied and you get a count of how many were created.

Where it earns its keep

Campaign variants. The case above. Configure the tracking once, then vary only what should vary.

Seasonal reuse. Last year's Black Friday link already has the right group, the right pixel and the right UTM campaign structure. Duplicate it, repoint it at this year's landing page, and leave the old one intact so its history stays readable.

Complex configurations. A link with geo-based redirection or a link rotation across four destinations represents real setup effort. Rebuilding that by hand to make a near-identical variant is exactly the sort of task where a step gets skipped. Copy it instead.

A safe place to experiment. Want to try a different redirect type or add a pixel to a link you have already shared publicly? Duplicate it, experiment on the copy, and leave the live link alone.

Small details that matter

Refreshing does not create a second copy. The duplicate action redirects cleanly afterwards, so an accidental page refresh will not quietly give you three copies of the same link.

Auto link keywords are deliberately not copied. A keyword rule points at one specific link. Copying the rule as well would leave two rules competing for the same keyword in your content, and whichever won would be essentially arbitrary. Add a keyword to the copy yourself if it needs one.

Favourites are per user, so they are not copied either.

Existing links are never touched. Duplicating creates something new. The original keeps its slug, its history and its position in your reports.

Try it

Duplicating links is part of URL Shortify PRO, and it is available now on the Links screen — as a row action for a single link, and as a bulk action for several.

If you build campaign links regularly, the time it saves is small each time and adds up quickly. More usefully, it removes a category of quiet mistakes: the pixel you forgot on one variant, the campaign name you typed slightly differently, the group you did not assign. Copies are consistent by construction.

The Duplicate a Short Link documentation has the full list of what is copied and what is reset.
